Our coop will be going on top of an area of yard w/ decomposed granite as the ground surface - due to rampant bobcats and other various creatures, I will be making the bottom of the entire coop/run area with wiring. I was planning to have a bit of a 'lip' on the edges and then putting straw over the wire to protect their feet. Is this sufficient or should I have an area w/ plywood or other non-wire surface? I plan to have them free-ranging on the DG outside the coop while we are in the yard and will build a tube-like run one day.
suggestions welcome! here is a very quick rough and not very accurate perspective drawing of my coop plans. Will be built out of scrap redwood from our fence and hardware cloth on the sides, bottom - enclosed area will be elevated 18", chickens will be able to roam between the 2 sides, right side of wired area will open like a door, left side of house will open for cleaning, nesting boxes will jet out from front, little door and an attached ramp will be on right.
