Hello all! I am new to my chickens. I have been wanting them for almost two years, and finally got some!

So, here's my story. I started with a coop from rural king that is sized for up to 8 chickens. I have it attached to a yard for them. Not sure on the exact size of the yard, but it is a big circle made out of 50feet of fencing.

I started with 4 hens (1 is a bannie (sp?)) and 1 bannie rooster. I got three eggs everyday from the first day I had them. I don't think my bannie is laying right now. Not sure why. Maybe not as old, or older than I was told.

So, after I got my fence built I decided to add more. I added 5 hens. I know that makes 9, but I figured since my bannie hen is about half the size of the others it would be fine.

Once I brought the 5 home, the very next day I got 8 eggs. I was ecstatic! But ever since then, the most I've gotten is 5.

They have 3 nesting boxes, which I've read is fine for 8 hens.

They eat mostly laying pellets with a little corn (I know this is controversial, but I've read pros and cons to both). They have oyster shell in a dish.

After a few days of them in the yard I started letting them free range in the evening. Still only 4-5 eggs a day.

Why did my number go down?

Sometimes that just happens. I have 8 laying hens, and I get about 6 eggs a day. Chickens, especially some breeds might not lay an egg every day.

Welcome to BYC!

Well, that coop that is supposed to hold 8?....is probably is only big enough for 4.
But that may depend on several other factors.
We'd need to know how big it is in feet by feet... and pics are always huge help.

Also need to know your climate....putting your location in your profile is a huge help to giving you better suggestions.

Layer feed is bare minimum on protein, the corn dilutes that protein.
So you may want to review your feeding regime.

How long ago did you add the new birds?
Adding new birds can be a huge stress factor and can cause both old an new birds to stop laying within a day or two.
Even more stress if there is not enough space in coop and run.
Could take days or weeks for them to settle in and start laying again.
