Decreasing flock size?

Hi all!

I have six chickens, three Rhode Island reds and three White Bantams ... all hens. I live in a residential area and have them free range all day. I do have predators, but nothing beyond raccoons, cats and rats (many of those). I recently decided that I think my flock size is too big for the space I have, even though the chickens seem happy and all get along. The white bantams seem to be much more adventurous and aggressive - however all six chickens generally band together when they are threatened.

I am considering giving the three white bantams away. Would this upset my flock dynamic completely? I do fear that since the reds are more docile that they won't then have adequate protection. Valid or will they rearrange their hierarchy? They are all quite young and are about to start laying. They do sleep in a secure coop at night.

I appreciate any advice.

Thanks
Marc

They'll adjust just fine. One of the reds will eventually step up and be boss hen. It may take a while or it may be sooner than you think.
