Hello, Today I able to do a phone consult with a vet regarding a couple sick hens. Came to the conclusion to try to treat for worms. Anyone use Dectomax before? Instructions were to put in their water ( we use 5 gal. pails) over the next few days. I have never given our chickens any medications before but have read several threads where people ask about withdrawal period. The vet said he personally does not worry about it. I tried looking up this medication but most info is on cattle. So what is there to be worried about? That we would get some of the med through the eggs? Just curious as we do sell some of our eggs.

Thanks

Yes so that is one medication we use on our ranch for our cattle. Anytime there is a withdrawl time it is for the safety of the consumed product overall. If it has a withdrawl time of say 8 days preslaughter that means you cannot give that medicine 8 days or less before that animal is to be killed because that medication would be traceable in their bloodstreem/meat.

Not sure what the withdrawl time is for Dectomax, we use Valbazen and Ivermectin for worms, alternating with Safegard occasionally. And while their are withdrawl times, we don't typically toss eggs after we treat, we still consume. Is Dectomax the only option for you to treat them? Do you know the type of worms (if the vet tested the stool? What was found?)

This was the medication that he chose for some reason. We did not get the stool tested, decision was based over a phone convo. 🤷‍♀️ 17 week old chicken pale comb and weakness. no mites.

Yeah it sounds like it wouldn't hurt to deworm, but if you haven't bought Dectomax already, you can try one of the others. If you choose a drench to dillute in water, just make sure that is the only water source (although you can't dillute a pour on or injectablen as they aren't used like a drench, they are directly applied to body or injected). If the bird isn't drinking and you use an oral dewormer, you'll have to dose orally with a dropper or syringe. Typically we worm once a month, if active case though (suspect) than you can give every 3 days for the course of a week.

With Dectomax though reading the lable there is the injectable form and the pour-on. Both have a really small dosage amount per body weight, but I'm only finding info for cattle and swine. So I don't know that I would use it in poultry. The injectable for swine body weight was .2mL /15 lbs, well most chickens weigh way prob half that (I think the pour on said 1mL/22 lbs body weight). I would try to get a poultry dewormer and use that (if it were me). I know Dectomax is broad spectrum, and that's why we treat our cattle with it when we work them, not sure I would use it on our chickens. Personally we've never had issues with either of the dewormers we use.
