I free renge my chicks for a short while each afternoon. They go directly to one of my raised bed, veg. area and do their thing; SCRATCH
I would like to maybe create an area for them to do their scratching. (Maybe putting stuff they will look for) and keep them away from the planting areas in general. Any ideas out there?

It won't work. They will still check everything out and will scratch anywhere that is loose. Either fence them in or fence them out.

what dobie lover said

I throw scratch out for the chickens once or twice a week and once they are done they wonder off and do whatever they want

This.

Chickens WILL scratch anywhere that looks at all promising for either finding food or creating dustbaths.

The only thing that will keep them out of your planting areas is a good fence.
