I use the deep litter method using pine shavings from TSC in my coop. I recently was offered all the sawdust I can use (more than enough) from a gentleman who makes cabinets and furniture. He uses all types of wood, mostly oak, pine and birch. I have heard that cedar is toxic to chickens but what about other types of wood? If there is no cedar in the savings, would this be safe?

Might be a little dusty, but as long as there isn't cedar I say go for it. If it's too dusty, you can always stop adding it.

Sawdust is very fine and can cause respiratory problems when the birds stir it up. I would stick with the shavings.
