I wanted to share my experience with the deep litter method..I have had my chickens since July and I used the deep litter method w/ pine shavings. I must admit, I was amazed at how clean the shavings were under the top layer. The next few inches were dark but clean, fluffy and in good shape, the bottom two inches had 'broken' down into saw-dust but it wasn't damp, stinky or even soiled! I cleaned it down to the concrete and sprinkled DE and Sevin in the corners, around the edges and on the floor, cleaned out the nest boxes and the dropping board and reapplied fresh, new shavings...
It did take me two hours to get it all done BUT one of my EE decided to wait until 5:30 (my start time) to want to lay her egg! She was making such a fuss about the condition of the nest box (empty of eggs and shavings) and my working in front of them--that I quickly added shavings in her favorite box and went out to sit in my comfy chicken watchin' chair and wait for her to come out---30 min. later...
I will definitely use this method from now on... Great results..
