are they easy with the mating? my guy is so rough & their backs are bare. they try to get away & they squawk w/pain sometimes. at first I thought it was because he is so big, but he's hard on them. how do "good" roosters go about the business of mating?

I've got a dozen chicks coming along. will adding to the flock (now have four hens) make things run smoother?

he's very protective & guards them well. am I mis-managing my flock? they free range & stay in a very secure coop at night.

i'm just wondering if he's a good rooster & I have my flock out of balance by having so few hens for him, or is he a rooster I need to get rid of.

My 2 roosters are easy, nice and treat my hens right. they never been rough with the hens. I also have about 11 roosters, 5 Rhode Island Red cockerel, 2 Silkies, 2 or 3 silkie mixes cockerels, and 2 nankin bantams.
The get along very well. but my nankin rooster never been rough with the hens. but if I see one of my roo being rough or hurt the hens. Id take him away from the hens for awhile or replace him with nice rooster.
