This is our 9 week old Delaware chick. She doesn't fit a mold when it comes to sexing. I have a friend willing to take all of our Roos, but we have an ambiguous bunch that are hard to sex. We have a barnyard mix, one obvious jerk of an EE roo, and the rest look like pullets obviously except this Delaware and a bantam Cochin with wattles and comb that change from yellow to red to yellow all day. Any help deciding what this ambiguous duo are once and for all?

hard to tell now in 3 weeks would be easier don't take any chances the worst scenaoiro is he could get a hen and not a rooster sorry I couldn't help

Thank you. I wish I had some of those chickens that everyone seems to have that are obvious one way or another. We are only allowed 5 chickens, and I have 9 right now. We were hoping to not have to wait until they are laying or crowing.

I had one that was confusing to me, too! Production Red with no comb or wattles at 14+ weeks, but I was seeing a slight greenish tint to black feathers in her? tail. I gave 3 pullets to my son & told him she might be a he. Since he lives on a huge avacado ranch, he can keep him. I'm wondering if she will be a roo! Good luck, & I'm hoping for the best!

i have 3 Delaware chicks that confused me for a long time. They are now 9 weeks old, and I'm still not 100% sure if I have a pullet. One of them the comb appeared to start growing, and turned a little pink. A week later, another ones grew huge and turned a deep red, while the first ones didn't change much at all. The only other thing that looks different on them is the tail. Male Delawares have clear barring on their tail feathers, while females are either white or black (or white with just a black tip), not barred.
For those reasons, I think you have a cockerel on your hands.

The cochin wins the First To Crow award, so definitely rooster on that one.  The delaware's comb is bigger, but not super yet at 12 weeks old like the other cockerels we have. I'm on the fence on it still, but I have no experience really.  I would say the delaware is a cockerel if I had to just due to size, stance, and the larger comb.
