Alright guys.... I'm a rouge chicken owner. They aren't really leagal where I am. LOL! But I have them anyway like many on here! So I had to get rid of my last girls because some neighbors turned me in.But they recently moved! YAY!! So I need to be REALLY off the radar and after much reasearch I have found that Delawares are a pretty quite calm breed. Is this true in your experience? Anyone have a delli that ISN"T calm (no roos just hens) Thanks for any thoughts!!

I have a hen that is a perpetual broody wanna be that screams bloody murder at me when I get her egg, but she DOES let me get it. She sounds more like a banshee so you might could just say you have seen a banshee flying around the neighborhood. Anyway, that's ONE hen out of 20. The other's are verrrrry quiet. She is the exception to the rule. There's always one somewhere

Well, I've had seven or so Delaware hens, all breeder stock. One of them is LOUD! We call Maxie the Mouth of the South. She sounds like a small cow bellowing and does it for no apparent reason that I can see.

I don't think I'd call them calm, exactly. They are attention hounds, that's for sure. Very active, good foragers, not great to be penned up constantly, in my opinion.

We have 7 hens now and 1 roo(all heritage)..had 2 roos and 3 more hens but sold the smaller flock.Lots of chicks growing up here as well.Mine are pretty quiet unless they are laying their egg then they get quite vocal. My roo can be carried around by my small kids no problem..the hens prefer not to be carried but will run to you for attention...very social birds I would call all of mine calm and not flighty but we have leghorns and Andy's so....
I would recommend them to anyone that wants a family type bird that is a great layer and they also taste real good

My hens are are pretty quiet and affectionate for the most part -they coo and chortle. I only have two that are loud mouths when they lay or when something startles them all. My roo is a talker, but you said no roos.

My Delawares came from Speckledhen. Mine are perfect angels, and are no trouble what so ever. A couple of the girls are like lap puppies, and love to snuggle. Mine are quiet. Even the roos are quiet, actually. OK, that is my group 1 Dels from Cyn. They are 23 wks old. NOW, group 2 (from same stock) are silly little biters. They love to bite me. As I think about it though, they are really much better now. Maybe that is with age, I dunno .... (they are about 16 wks old). They are all very very friendly, and I love them!

My 6 yr old grandson came to visit over Easter. We have a gazillion chickens, and he was a bit stand-offish and didn't know what to expect. WELL, that is, until he met the Delawares! He loves them, and begged to take some home with him. He loved that the girls would jump up and sit on the picnic table seat, between the two of us.
