My friend gave me this barred rock hen who supposedly got bullied out of two other flocks. I’m now her third attempt. I have no history other than what I’ve already said. From going down the google rabbit hole(new chicken owner)I have an inkling she may have “coccidosis” or however you spell it. I will be starting Corid tomorrow for the whole flock just to make sure she’s ok and everyone else is. I have 8 hens who grew up together with me being their second owner. I’m introducing 2 hens I bought from a friend and again was given this hen from a different friend. The two newer hens are fine with her and actually don’t mind being in the same kennel as the barred rock. My other hens were on the other hand attack the barred rock. They doing the pecking order stuff with the other two new ones but seem to ATTACK just the barred rock. I have one predominant hen that I guess is Queen of the Coop who is the most aggressive with her. I tried putting the Queen in the kennel and seeing how the others did with the barred rock but then multiple of them jumped her. I’ve only had her a few days and I’m letting them roost together at night and they do ok from what I can tell. I just don’t want to be a third failure for this girl to get into a flock 😭

Hello! Welcome to BYC! I hope all of the chicken drama works out! Personally, I would do the see no touch method. Put her in a cage or some type of enclosure where the other birds can see her but not get at her. preferably in the run where the other birds are. For at least a week, longer usually works better for me. Then do a supervised integration. Has always worked for me!

Ok I have her in a large dog kennel (pictured) in the covered run. My farm friend had me put her in the roost at night and then today had me let her out with the others. Maybe too soon for all that😅

If she's new and unwell she will get bullied. @Bsmac gave you good information.

Some people have good luck adding a new hen right into the coop, but from what I understand it's rare and depends on the overall temperament of the flock.

In the future, I would recommend quarantining a new bird for 30 days as far from the flock as possible. It prevents the new bird from passing on an illness or parasite to the entire flock and vice versa. It's easier to treat 1 sick bird than an entire flock.

I read that and that’s what made me look into coccidosis or whatever. My corid just came in like 10 minutes ago so I’m going to start it tomorrow and treat everyone just to make sure. Is there anything else sickness wise I should look out for? She lays down in the cage but I figured that was from being excluded and attacked so much. She also almost faceplants when I do the little toss. Like when she was getting attacked I did the little toss to get her back in the kennel and she face planted and wings went out but didn’t flap. (By toss I just mean like if a chicken got out and you toss back into their area. I’m not throwing them hard or anything like that!!😅)

It sounds like she might have more going on than just coccidiosis. Definitely treat her for it but if the face-planting doesn’t stop come back for more advice. I have personally never seen a chicken picked on for just coccidiosis unless it was so far advanced the poor thing was starved and weak.

Again I’m new to all things chicken😭😭 I just googled her symptoms and that’s what popped up! So any other suggestions I’d gladly hear out!! My friend mentioned parasites or worms but okayed the corid treatment.

Did you do a good health check of her? Listen to her breath, check for any unusual lumps (especially by vent and abdomen) check for mites/lice. Check legs and feet for leg mites. Keep check of her dropping for any signs of worms. What was her diet at the friends house?

I just texted my friend and asked. She said she feeds them feed made by a local farm. They had her ~6 months. I’ve picked her up a bunch and haven’t felt anything odd. I looked at her vent and it seemed fine. She laid 2 eggs since I’ve got her that were normal. Again the two others are in there with her but the poops I’ve seen are mostly normal. I saw one that looked like slimy/shiny brown but no worms that I saw.

I knew what you meant by toss. I "toss" my chicks (4 weeks and older) back over a 4ft fence if they manage to outmaneuver me and get loose.

I'd check her wings for injures since she's gotten attacked they maybe sore. Also one of the previous owners may've clipped one of her wings. I clip mine when they turn 6 weeks. I've had a few bantams get over a 6ft fence, so I'm proactive about wing trims now.
