I have a rooster who is in a coop and pen by himself - as I am integrating some young pullets into the flock and he has been attacking them.

He has been there only 3 days, and has quit crowing and doesn't seem to be eating. Today being Saturday, I could keep an eye on him and he spent most of the day inside the coop on the roost.

I do not think he is ill, as he was in the coop a couple of weeks ago for several days while I was waiting for a saddle to show up in the mail. He was back in the main coop, and very very happy to be back with his hens.

Any ideas? He won't even eat treat food. He is pretty skittish, I have only had him a few months (he was supposedly a pullet).

He is lonely and needs a companion...but not a rooster...he wants to be with the pullets...to keep him from pecking them too much, just let them be around(socialize )each other for a few hours a day.that way he is happy and the hens don't get hurt.

I agree, he needs a friend. Chickens are very social animals. I don't agree about not putting another rooster in with him though. Roosters can live quite peacefully together in a bachelor pad (read- no hens to fight over).
