This is a new project that got sprung on me. I don't know a whole lot about raising chickens, but my mom and daughter would like to start this project and I would like to contribute also. The coop that we are hoping to create would be located on the farm and we would like to have the bottom opened, but we also want to be able to move it easily so we can always have a clean area for them.

I've seen a couple of designs that I think would be suitable and pretty simple to create.

Any suggestions or tips would be fantastic. I am very excited about this project.

It sounds like you are wanting to build a chicken tractor. Checkout the COOPS link at the top of this page. A lot of great ideas and designs. I would start with 4 or 5 chickens before you jump in head over heals with 50! Fifty chickens will need a very large coop and plenty of outside room to roam.

I did check out the COOPS link and there are a lot of great designs. The chicks that we have are going to be meat chickens. I think we are going to use an old milkhouse as their housing and then just put up a fence around the area. This way it stays pretty inexpensive.
