despeart for some help all my babys are dying

Don't forget to also answer mine > wERE they (and are they still if so) on medicated starter?
sulmet is hard on the system and the info I have read recommends amprollium based product for chicks and sulmet for the older (pullet and up) age.

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE "a selenium pill" > yes such a mega dosage of vitE recquires selenium in order for it to be absorbed but such a mega dose is only indicated in specific circumstances (usually toxicity or in cases where neurological symptoms/damage is involved)
SELENIUM SHOULD NEVER EXCEED 50MICROgrams ... IT HAS A VERY NARROW THERAPEUTIC RANGE (meaning it is toxic when exceeding this dosage) vit E and selenium are retained and for chicks you should give half the recommended amount for an adult AND IF NOT SHOWING NEUROLOGICAL SYMPTOMS OR TOXICITY (or where specifically indicated ) DO NOT EXCEED ONE HALF OF A HUMAN COMBO PILL (see below) and then only one (not once a day but ONE time ) ...
selenium comes in two forms ... and inorganic an organic form... ONLY the organic form is advised now > There is a COMBINATION of vitE/selenium (and the correct form of selenium) > PLEASE use this product (it will usually be either 400 or 750 IU vit E but it is the selenium dosage you want to check for > no more than 50 MICROgrams per pill (one whole pill for adult / one half for chick )... It is a gel cap and you pr i ck open and squeeze out the contents.
I do not see the particular advantage in this case of suspected heat stress or cocci ? > vitamin C (NOT calcium but vitamin C like in the orange juice kind of vitamin C) has been shown to be helpful with heat stress and similar symptoms...

YOUR STATEMENT
I will check on them again and one or two will be sitting off alone. They will have there wings lowered and kind of fluffed up they look like they are tired. When I come back out they are lying on there side and are very week and unable to keep there head up. There crops are empty, no pasty butt’s.
MY ANWER

if you think they are just starving and need gut refresher then just do that

I do know that if chickens either chicks or adults are kept from water and feed then they will become weakened

I supposed it was from coccidiosis as they are wiith adults???

but I do know they need the apple cider vinegar and feed
by making the wet mash they will get the benefit from the milk and vit's

There is a need to immediate action which ever course you decide on

my suggestions were a honest effort to help the chicks to live

I do not think getting emotional at this point will ever help the chicks live
One has to decide immediate action to save them
sorry if I offended any one

any questions email me

Now do you think it is heat stress?

if so do as you feel is right
Possibly just the fact that they need the water and feed and they can then get going[/b]

thanks for the info on selinium
I must have read your original info on adding selnium with vit E
but will redo my posts
thanks again
any question on my posts email me

Anytime Glenda... Yes you are correct about the selenium being necessary for absorption of E > ... as far as I am able to "guestimate" on the dosage from the research I have read is that anything above 200 IU of vit E thereabouts recquires selenium for it to be absorbed...
as you probably noticed my info on the sleneium/vitE are spread over more than one section at my library ... main thing bout the selenium is
> do not use the inorganic form (this is usually the powder form > in birds at any rate it is poorly absorbed and yet still retained > lots of research on the selenium but the bottom line is that the therapeutic range is very narrow > and some areas of the USA have a high selenium content in forage so it is always better to err on the side of too little than take a chance on even a minimal overdosage (or giving it too often).
WHEATGERM oil provides a bit and the aVIACHARGE 2000 is one of the few daily formulated supplements with both E and selenium provided (and the correct form of selenium) > when no toxicity is involved or neurological symptoms I figure it is safest to go with one of those.

well I used just the wheat germ oil as Vit E and then the neurological use is of use when suc as silkies is involved. I used the Vit E capsules a lot

the chicks will need some gut florisher and restoreing the gut Vit E is necessary

especially when a chick has been with out feed or water and the body needs moisture

the ACV is very good for that

I am happy you told me this
as I checked at walmart and the selinium was a very low amt

but will not mentioned it again as I don't want any one to lose their chicks

I know the vit E has worked for a lot of my friends and saved chickens
any questions email me

yes... the NRC reccomendations are way out of date (not "up to date with recent nutritional research) and in reviewing the industry news supplements have become more or less the norm (including specifically vit E/slenium) as the feed companies are not going to exceed the NRC recommendations .
I give my birds a combination tab through their feed once a month.

Ok thanks for all the replies. I went out in the coop and sat there for a few minutes and thought what is so different in the coop this year? Years past I did not have any trouble. I could not think of any thing. I went on about my day reading and reading articles about chickens nothing matched what was going on. I went to bed and around 3am I sat straight up and yelled GRAVEL! My husband runs his own concrete business and he had some extra gravel that he put in the coop floor. I went out at 330am and shoveled out all the gravel. I dug down about 1 to 2 inches. I talked to my hubby in the morn and he said there might be some lime in it and some other stuff. I put all the baby’s in a different enclosure and it’s been two day now and no dead chicks. I hope this is what the problem was. So who ever was the one who sent me a message asking me about previous year baby’s thanks. I will post again in a couple days to let all of you know if that was the prob. So again thank you for all the reply’s.

I hope your chicks are better! I had a thought. Are you giving them baby chick grit? Are they eating LAYER feed (you posted chick feed & ?) I know it only takes a very short time for any chick to dry out & dehydrate, they will do it before you even realize it. The layer feed can cause kidney & liver damage, maybe the gravel in your run was too much limestone? I hope you figure it out. Best of luck, Henz

Have you been Pming the previous posters?
Please reply to the previous posters if you haven't already. We can only help your chickies if we have all the information.
Good Luck with your chickies!
All their advise is top notch!!
They have all helped a lot of chickeners!!

Keep us posted, please.
