Have any of you tried to develop your own breed of chicken. And if so what crosses did you make. Are you now getting good results from your breeding?

I AM MAKING A NEW BREED!!! it will be the egg laying production of rhode island reds, the speed of bannys, the size of a americona and i willl make it be able to fight predators with super long spurs......they will be called......JOSHUAS!!!!!!!

But so far its is not going very good. it has been hard because they dont like each other

there's someone in hawaii trying to make their own sweedish flower hens... ended up getting some dun hybrids that are also a mille fleur project... a couple generations down, and they will breed true... awesome...

Well you need to set up a goal and then select breeds that will help you achieve what you want. Im creating one called Scottish Hens (I live in Scotland ct) and I want something sustainable that is feed efficient, brood chicks, males protective over hens so they can be free ranged, cold hardy and still lay through the winter. With that goal im selecting breeds to create that. I have a few rules too, such as Only the first generation can be from pure parents, the rest must be cross breds and I can't import eggs from another state. So im only working with birds from the ma/ri/ct/tristate area. From there is Cull Cull Cull Cull and more Culling.

Now to actually get the breed recognized, well that's a whole entire different story!

Bingo. People must remember, crossing a bunch of random chickens isn't how you make a breed.

It requires years of work, the ability to breed true to your proposed goal, and more than just you who've had this breed for over 5 years.

Not only is it crossing birds is making sure they breed true too!!! Loads of work and LOTs of Culls.... Plan to have chicken dinners for the next 10 years!

I forgot, but someone on here developed a new variation for the wyandottes and it took him over 10 years just to get the COLOR to breed true!
