A couple weeks ago DH and I are sitting in the car waiting for DD#3 to get out of school. I'm browsing BYC on my iphone (because my name is Tricia, and I'm addicted to chickens) and I show my hubby an auction for some frizzle bantam polish. He exclaims "Those aren't real, they look like muppets made of yarn! Bid on them!" Sadly we were outbid. Then again and again we were out bid on a few auctions for the same type of bird. DH kept checking back to see if we won any "yarn babies" yet while he was away on duty in AZ. So on my last auction I even set my alarm for 5 am and placed a bid at the last second (then I fell right back to sleep). Sadly I was outbid by a penny!
But I recieved a PM from TurtleFeathers a little while later offering some eggs. Yay! Yarn Babies for DH.
Now mind you I had no intention of even looking at the incubator as we have a nice little laying flock in the backyard and 10 runner ducklings arriving from Holderreads next month. ( And the kids, the goats, the dogs, the crazy mother living with me, blah, blah, blah) But DH is a big fat ENABLER!!!
Yesterday we loaded all 5 kids into the back of the minivan and headed out to Ventura 2 hrs away (thank you to the genius who decided DVD players belonged in cars!) to attend our first poultry show. DD#3 age 7 was in heaven. She has full blown chicken fever. Who knew the school library contained so many books on chickens, certainly not the librarian I assure you. We could not get over how GIANT the birds were. And they had runner ducks, which we had never seen before in real life!
We left and had lunch looking out at the ocean (our ladies had never seen the ocean before!) and headed back for the auction! Well DH is whispering in my ear "Bid, Bid" and DDs are cheering and clapping (while DSs, 17 and 14, are sitting there mortified by their family yet again making such a commotion). Low and behold we left with 2 dz more bantam hatching eggs. 1 dz bantam buff laced polish and 1 dz bantam Buff Plymouth Rocks (Dave Anderson lines, which seemed a big selling point for people there, but being fairly new to all this, I just knew the ones being shown were lovely).
So now it's time to find out all about putting DD into 4H and building a new brooder! Oh and I also need another incubator because I will have staggered hatches!
It was a fantastic day. The kids got to play on the beach for a while and we all went home tired and happy.
