dh killed one of our eldest chicks- we *think*

dh was putting his tools away into the screenhouse so he could use them tomorrow. He was bringing a second load into it when he came upon a dead roo

. Seems like (only way we can figure) the roo was under the screenhouse and when dh left the first time he came out and somehow got his neck broken in the screen door. We can't figure anything else out. No commotion, nothing else. Poor thing

he was 14 weeks old.

I'm sorry. It could have happened in any number of ways, try not to be hard on yourselves.

Was his neck actually broken though? Somtimes as hard as it is to accept, chickens do fall over dead for no reason.

Well, he was real floppy(I'm sure all dead chickens are), we just assumed that since he was right under the door to the screenhouse the door caught him. I guess it is possible he just dropped, he was the lesser of the 2 roos and wandered away from the flock frequently. Guess we will never know

I completely can't face the fact that sometime my babies will die, whether from predators or old age.

but accidents do happen,,,,,, i got size 14 feet,,,, chicks are REALLY small,,,its happened to me twice.
maybe he was chasing something and ran into the steps too hard,,,( least thats what i would tell myself.
