DH got to work this morning at about 7:20. He works in an area near the river where it is a secluded. He got out of the car and saw a mountain lion slinking away.

Wow! I live down here in Florida, so I never worry about predators that big. Hope you don't lose any birds to that cat! I might not ever leave the house again if I saw a mountain lion here in Florida, and if I saw one outside my house......ugh

Actually, DH only works a few miles from the house. Since mountain lions have ranges of like 60 square miles or more, I assume that it is probably the same one my neighbor saw when he was walking his dog just up the road. So far it hasn't bothered anything. We have quite a deer and rabbit surplus in the area so it probably eats well without ever going near a coop.

I have been seeing alot about them lately. There have been reports here in NY and I think NJ. So far they are just saying no confirmed cases of them being present, but I would think they would travel to areas they are not normally. We have lots of deer, wild turkeys etc, so food supply would not be a problem. We also have coyote and even bear in our area of NY, so they are surviving here so why not mountain lions.

Living in Colorado you have to watch out for Mountain Lions! Fortunately I live a little further out towards the prairie so I only have to be careful when I go hiking. There are quite a few that have grown fat and sassy on a steady diet of Broadmoor pedigreed poodles. They even attack the occasional yuppy jogger.

So far this year we've seen a cougar (mountain lion) and two bobcats (momma and kit) plus the usual pack of coyotes. The cougar is a worry because he's big and he has no fear of humans - we've seen him by the road in daylight (although we also had a mild winter and the mule deer and white-tail deer population is high this year, along with the jackrabbits and rabbits, so he's well fed). We live right on the edge of a wildlife refuge and this has been a big year for bald eagles and golden eagles as well - they used to just migrate, but the past 10 years or so, larger and larger populations have become resident. We have a bald eagle nest within a mile (and 3 osprey nests).

Adds a new dimension to the coop run - can I keep a cougar or bear out? No, not really. I keep a pellet gun handy for scaring off coyotes, but a cougar isn't going to be impressed by it. I REALLY don't want to escalate my armaments, but I worry about my dogs getting attacked and/or mauled.

Here in Florida we have panthers but they are very rare, but also we have coyotes, foxes and bears. We have coyotes that come into the pasture behind us and some friends close by have lost a few birds to foxes.

You're right Zilla. You can also add Yorkies, Chihuahuas, little boys, etc.

The house we lived in before this one wasn't out in the country or the mtns by any means but at night you could here them screaming and the coyotes yippin and howling. Very eerie coming from the black of night.

Be careful horsejody!
