In really want to start using DE in my coop and run, but I notice everyone here insists in food grade. The guy who sold me my chickens said this is not necessary. I do not plan to use it in their food as of yet. Just to combat bugs in their environment. Is it OK to start with non-food grade in this situation?

no, you need the food grade whether you're putting in their food or not. there are several reasons to use food grade, that escape me but if you'll google it, you can find out anything you want about it.

here's a link and some info:
http://www.absorbentproductsltd.com/food-grade-diatomaceous-earth-vs-pool-grade.html

the last thing it says is:
Can pool grade DE be used for anything other than filtration?

Because of its high crystalline silica content, pool grade diatomaceous earth should not be used for anything other than filtration.
