I think I did a bad thing. I had separated a 3 week old bantam favorelle from the rest of the other chicks to raise with a turkey poult that did not walk well for about a week. I placed the favorelle chick back in with the other 3-4 week old chicks yesterday and all seemed fine. When I woke up this morning it was dead.

I am SO bummed-it was my most friendly chick. It had no wounds or evidence on it-just dead. Do you think the other chicks killed it? I didn't think they would be so aggressive so young. Hard lesson to learn.

There's not a big window of time before you can add chicks without separating them and integrating. It's really hard to say what the cause is, but it is possible. The pecking order is brutal and starts at a young age. It all depends on the breed as well.

Last year I had 2 sets of chicks in two separate brooders. I could not integrate until the youngest were 3-4 months old and it took 3 weeks to integrate successfully.

I personally would not take a chick out, then later introduce alone.

Chickens can die at any age not knowing the cause. I do know that you can not just throw them together unless they are a few days old. So sorry for your loss.

were the chicks that you placed her back in with bigger than her?...if so they could have trampled her to death on accident...so sorry for your loss.

Hi Laura,

I don't think you killed it at all!

Today was a sad Day for my family too!

I woke up this morning to find my Faverolle chick 'Rocky' Dead!
I cant understand why she died, yesterday she was running around, eating, drinking, chirping and being nosey!

Sometimes these things just happen, its natures way of telling us that it just wasnt meant to be!

It is sad I know

The day before I had to actually put the other Faverolle chick 'Fruit Loop' to chicken heaven, but she was really not very well, she couldnt walk properly and had a massive growth on her neck :( so sad.

Unfortunately you dont know if there are any abnormalities inside these chicks, they could have a weak heart or an infection of some kind, its so hard to tell and a complete heartbreaker.

Just be thankful for the ones who do survive :)

Hope this helps you feel abit better

I put four one day old chicks in with 16 one week old chicks. they got along right from the start.. the day old chicks are quite a bit smaller than the week old chicks.

I also have around 33 chicks that are six weeks old. as they grew the brooder was too small so i seperated them into three brooders. over time I have changed them around a bit. just last week I noticed one was being picked on and some missing feathers. I took that one out and put it in another brooder with some other chicks with no problems and now its not being picked on. Maybe im lucky i dont know...but... I dont think you killed your chick at all.. sometimes these things happen.
