One picture is of the one’s I think are pullets and the cockerels are the picture in the wire little pen.
This is my first time hatching CCL so I would love someone else’s opinion on them.

Just an FYI, I hatched 2 CCL's a couple of months ago and one of them had down that was consistent with a cockerel. Well, it's a pullet. Of course those shouldn't be bred, but please keep this in the back of your mind about those cockerels. I love both of my pullets!

thank you for tagging!

and for the tip. usually you hear about ‘my pullet is actually cockerel’ so it’s nice to have the other way around happen. 🤣

I would say you did a great job! Looks pretty accurate to me. :)

You're absolutely right about that! I'm still a bit shocked because my luck with getting cockerels usually leans the other way! I am thrilled and have been spoiling that bird ever since (like the bird had anything to do with it, haha). I should have known before now, but I just had it in my head that it was a cockerel due to down coloring. I was happy either way because who doesn't love CCL's?
You had an amazing hatch! They're so adorable!

I’m so excited to have some CCL!
My worst luck with cockerels so far was 3/4 BLRW were roosters and it was my first batch of chicks ever so I kept telling myself those 3 were just giants because thats the breed 🤣🤣 looking back I should have known way sooner.

Keep in mind though that some boys will not have a clear yellow dot and some girls do not have the clear chipmunk stripe and the v on the forehead, but I do not think you will see girls with the dot. Ideally if they are not clearly identifiable at hatch, they should not be used for breeding as one of the beauties of this breed is the auto sexing quality. Because of its popularity though, there is a risk of this quality being lost. The hatcheries that sell CCL vent sex all of their chicks, as the auto-sexing is not reliable enough in most hatchery quality birds.
Congratulations on your awesome hatch! :)

Thank you for telling me that! I want to breed these so I will keep an eye and move any that didn’t sex correctly at hatch to free range flock of eggs we eat!
These came from a breeder.
