I have 14 week old Blue Plymouth Rocks, 1 rooster 4 hens. 3 days ago there was an egg in a nesting box and then when let out to free roam one hen laid a shell less egg, so 2 eggs total in one day. I had just gone to feed store for more chick/grower feed, so I went back and returned for layer feed. No eggs have been laid since! Should I get more grower food or stick with layer feed? I do treat with fly grubs/ mealworms and just started letting them out for 1 hour before dusk. The layer feed won't be wasted as I also was given a 1 1/2 yrs old Sussex and a Barred Rock hens, kept in a different enclosure. Hopefully I will be able to get them together, but first two free range together had a few skirmishes! Also, I have seen on this board that roosters shouldn't eat layer feed due to calcium?? I can not separate to feed so again I am wondering if I should stay on grower feed and just add a calcium in separate feeder. ( I do crush their shells back up and feed to my older hens) Thank you for any help!

I gathered a lot of info prior to getting chicks but I seem to learn something new every time I check out this site! I didn’t really look too much into roosters because I purposely bought all females. Well, two rooster snuck in but one was taken by a raccoon.

3 yrs ago, I was so anxious for my hens (after waiting years) that I got whatever I could get my hands on -- 4 Partridge Rocks. Lost 2 to hawks earlier this year, but otherwise they've been great. I just received 9 more chicks this week. Picked up a couple pretty ones (Blue Orpingtons), but the rest are pretty normal (Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, and Easter Eggers -- because other chicks I wanted weren't available for shipping, so I opted for the EEs). My blue chicks are just too adorable!!
