Out of 6 eggs one died in the shell. The shell was cracked, but not zipped. There was some dried ooze that seeped out of the crack. I opened it up to see what happened.

These were shipped bantam cochin eggs, and they were noticeably smaller than eggs from my own cochins. Maybe they were pullet eggs?

My theory is that the chick grew too large for the small shell, thus cracking it. What do you think?

They were hatched under a broody. And it is like a sauna here in NC.

Seems like such a waste to have them come so far......
I think humidity. I had lots of pullet eggs hatch under a broody and now some from the bator.

I had a very bad hatch from pullet eggs that I think was all due to the chicks being too large. The 2 out of 24 that survived I had to help and they were crammed in weird positions unable to move. Both had their heads under their wings with no clearance so after pipping they couldn't move their head to zip and couldn't turn their bodies. These eggs were also all rather pointed so what size was there was too narrow for much of the chick to fit. I have had some pullet eggs hatch since then but I do not expect as high of hatch rate when I set pullet eggs and I do not sell or ship them.
