We have 2 RIR pullets that have settled in just fine and today while out....very coincidentally there were chicks at the feed store and my son talked me into it. So now we have 2 New Hampshire Red pullets as well.

Can anyone tell me the differences between the two?

Thank you!!

The only difference I can see is plumage color -- Rhode Islands are darker (more red) where as New Hampshires are lighter (more orange). Though I am certainly not an expert on either breed.

In the APA Standard, the two breeds have somewhat different body types as well (the main difference is back length and tail angle), but that probably wouldn't typically be discernible in non-show birds.

My NHR is much friendlier than my RIR. These are all pullets I have. The NHR and my Buff orp are the first to me when I come through the gate. Very friendly.

My RiR and production red both stay out of reach.

My new hampshire was the first to lay of my flock at 16 weeks to the day. She's laid an egg every day siince.

The main difference is color and then temperment and disposition Pretty much in that order With the NH being of the best temperment Very gentle birds and the roos are pretty much the same way They arent mean but more stand offish My wife and me both love them
