I started with 11 full-size chicks, went back to TSC 5 days later to get a different watered and came home with 8 mixed bantam ( so new to this I had never seen bantam chicks, so cute). I already had another brooder set up for chicks I am getting April 28. The bantams are quiet, they cuddle with me and are generally laid-back compared to the other 11 spazzy chicks. The 11 big chicks are loud, they are somewhat aggressive around feed. Is this normal of bantams? I am so new to this, I looked for another post similar and didn't see anything. My "chicken friends" have not raised bantams so I am curious will they always be like this?

Also, as a group the bantams don't go for treats -- boiled egg, yogurt, worms. Just curious the big ones gobble everything in sight.

My uneducated guess is that your full size chicks are just older...

Alternatively, your standard size chicks are of a more rowdy type such as Rhode Island or Leghorns, while your bantams happen to be a more mellow variety such as Cochins.

I have 9 girls, who are all around one year olds. 3 of them are bantam cochins, from TSC. The big girls started picking on my little girls about a month ago.

I now have to let the little girls out for the day. The big girls only come out for a couple of hours in the evening, when we are around. They wander and we live in the city, without a perimeter fence(working on that one.) I am planning on building a separate banty coop, because those 3 are really more like pets, and I will probably keep them until they die of natural causes. They all roost together, but first thing in the am, I am putting the bantys out. Kind of a pain, but I wanted you to be aware that this could happen.

Thanks for thoughts. I hadn't planned on bantams but OMG they were so darn cute in the TSC. We are building three sections in our 12x24. One in middle will be where I collect eggs from both sides and be my potting shed/my space kind of thing. One chicken coop will be slightly smaller and would even hold a goat or two. I am prepared, but hope that doesn't happen. Also want to have a small pen or two in garden shed to hold babies or sick/ injured birds. So I think we will be good. I spent about 8 years dreaming up my coop, I hope I've planned well enough, I am sure there will be something I wished we had done different. There will be a run on each side of coop too. We are fortunAte to not have neighBors that can see us and enough land to expand if we need to.
