Hi! I have 2 Rhode Island Red backyard chickens but one lays brown eggs and the other lays speckled eggs. Is this normal? Yes, I’m new at this. I raised them from chicks this spring.

If they're hatchery chicks, it's unlikely that they're pure RIR, and even within a breed, there are variations in egg color. It also depends on how long they've been laying, what they're eating, etc. In short, it's very normal to have two different colors of egg from the same breed--and sometimes even the same hen.

Welcome to BYC. Given the genetic diversity possible especially in hatchery birds, it is not uncommon to have egg color differences.
