Different temperments and behaviors

Our chicks are about 14 days old now.
I'm noting huge differences in their attitudes.
The Cochins are so sweet hardly ever run from me and often sit to be petted.
The Buff Orpingtons are not as friendly as the cochin but they don't freak out like my Marans do. As soon as I open the hutch door the Marans are running from end to end trampling each other. I'm afraid someone is gonna get hurt.
Anyone else noting differences in their breeds behaviors?

I have chickies, too.

I have:

- 2 Buff Orpintons... they are the biggest and I think the one is gonna be the top of the pecking order

- 2 Silkies... they are a little flighty compared to everyone else

- 2 Brahmas.... they are the smallest and they like to be up high.

- 2 Cochins.. these guys are really laid back and mellow

Should be interesting to see how things go.

I'm really liking the Cochins. If things go well maybe I will get a whole bunch of cochins next time.

Oh there are some huge differences between the breeds.There are some more flighty,more standoffish and some more lap pets. Then there is the exception to that in every breed

Also some breeds don't like to be cooped up and others won't mind it.
We have well in excess of 100 chickens and even within the breeds different personalities emerge.

I could tell my chickens attitudes within the first 2 weeks. I have 4 different breeds.

Black Austalorps~ love being held, are right there once you open that brooder door. They don't try to fly away or anything. My kids 2 and 4 can hold those two chicks all day long. Even now at 4 weeks old they still will just fall asleep in there arms.

Silver Laced Wyandotte~ loves being held also, she is right at the door with the australorps. She is basicaly the same as the australorps but she likes the peck at you, any freckle or mole you have she will try to peck at it.

Golden Laced Wyandotte~ really likes to just do her own thing. She has a favorite person, my hubby. She will sit with him all day and not cherp to go back with the other chicks. She doesn't come running to the front of the brooder, she really doesn't care if you open the door or not, but she doesn't run like crazy if you try to pick her up.

Easter Eggers~ all three of ours are flighty birds. You have to chase them to pick them up and take a minute to calm them down. Once they are calm they are ok being held. They are very curious little birds.

It is funny how you can tell early how they are and how different the breeds are.

I have 19 2 1/2 weeks old chicks right now - several different breeds. I notice the exact same thing you do - my 2 marans are drama chicks. They run and act nuts when I come around - you'd think I had a butcher knife in my hand. They get everyone esle going and it turns into a circus!!

The calmest are my BLRW and the bravest are the BO's & Delaware.

I am trying to hold the marans more and hopefully they will figure out that I am good and not scary and evil. After all I love them!

In anycase they are cute and always amusing to watch. It seems they grow more pretty wing and tail feathers everyday.

I have Buff Brahma bantams, a Barred Rock bantam, and some Red Star packing peanuts, all females, 6 weeks old now. The Red Stars seemed to be really imprinted on humans from the first - all wanting to be snuggled and stuff. They're still the most likely to come over to the front of the run to say hi or hop up on your leg But they're not nearly as inclined towards hysteria when there's shredded zucchini treats around.

The Brahmas are sweeties - calm and easygoing most of the time (except for zucchini time as mentioned above). One loves to jump up on your arm and look at you. They all have different personalities and voices now.

The BR started out tiny and quite calm, but has gotten pretty squirmy the last few weeks. She is very assertive for her rights - she gets to any treats first, and always gets to be the one in the middle when they're snuggling at night. ;-) She is also very vocal - starting with the loudest peeps when she was a baby. She loves to hang with the Red Stars, but would get cold before they did because she's about a quarter their size. So she's just stay there and peep forlornly. It's taking forever for her feathers to come in - all the others are fully feathered, but she's just starting. Her down has worn off at the tops of her wings, so she's got bare patches. I hope she gets more feathered so I can move them outside full time next weekend.

It's so cool seeing the different personalities of the various breeds.

I've just had my chicks for 2 days and already see some differences even within the same breed. Some of the ones I got 1 week old take more kindly to being held, some squirm more. One seems more intelligent or curious. It will be fascinating to see how they develop as they get older.

Laurelm my Marans are the same you would think I had a butcher knife and BBQ sauce..lol
