Different type of layer food

Pellets and crumbles are both "extruded" products, Sunnydee. The machines work something like those that make pasta products and exactly like the machines that make dry dog and cat food.

Poultry feed is made from ground grain, mostly. That ground material mixed with minerals, vitamins, and maybe animal protein would be known as "mash" in some parts of the country.

You can crush pellets or lots of people pour hot water on them. Many don't like pellets. I think crumbles are preferable, also.

I went to Agway and they had crumbles. I didn't realize how small it would be! It is almost the same size as the grower mix I had them on when they were babies.

Anyhow, I brought it home and they LOVED it. I also mixed some with warm milk and added some berries. The gobbled it up in no time.

Thanks for all the advice.

Steve:

Just one point of clarification.

Pastas and Pet Foods are EXTRUDED while pellets/crumbles are PELLETED. The machinery is different and results in much lower temperatures for the pelleted feeds.

An extruder depends on mechanical energy from a screw and can have temperatures approaching 350 to 400 F. A Pellet mill ustilizes mechanical energy from rolling wheels and rotational energy. The temperatures are lower.

We fed the little starter crumbles I picked up at TSC. Then I went to a different feed store where they brought the stuff out to your car. I just asked for the 'baby' chick food. OMG, they gave me the mash. I had always made a warm gruel for them out of the crumbles by just soaking it in hot water for a few seconds. Well, this mash wouldn't soak! It was a PITA. Plus, when I put it in their feeder, they dug it all up and tossedit all over. I was glad when it was all gone!

Easy for me to get in trouble using the word "exactly."

Thank you Jim - for the clarification.
