Dimensions for nest box?

My DH converted some old kitchen cabinets into next boxes.....there's been little use, maybe a couple of eggs a day, the rest are lain in an old horse feeder.

I'm wondering if the boxes aren't deep enough. I think they're about 12" to 15" deep.

Also, how much of a "lip" should be in front, to hold shavings and eggs in?

the nestbox size us just fine depth.how wide an long are the nestboxes.
