Dirty Shipped Eggs What Should I do?

I am going to echo that those eggs aren't bad at all. I'd pop them in the incubator as they are rather than fussing with them, personally.

Those are not that dirty. Especially since it appears they have "mud" and not "poop" on them. DO NOT WASH them, though. They have bloom on them which will help prevent the dirt from entering the pores. But DO make sure to thoroughly sanitize your bator when your hatch is over.

I know that cleaning the eggs can be counter productive b/c you destroy the bloom. That's one of the reasons I didn't know what to do! Its good to hear that so many of you get good hatches with dirty eggs. I will try sanding the heaviest dirt off and just set them and hope for the best. Thanks for your help!

No problem!

If you mist them all over with betadine (povidone iodine) mixed with water to look like iced tea, you will 'replace' the bloom. This works very well for me when I sand, and I'll just lay them out on an old towel, mist, wait for it to dry, turn, mist the other side, and set once dry.

You should set them and forget them.... they will still hatch. I have recieved dirtier... I just set them alone in a incubator.

You may want to say something, but I never have said a thing. I hatch them and that is what I paid to do.

Hi from Ga., I would rather they were dirty than clean. I would worry more about the age I don't like eggs more than 7 days old. Some think its OK to 10 days but I don't. NPIP Ga.-1211

no no no no WATER. use a paper towel get off what you can. if not use a VERY "light" sand paper and just get the clumps and what not off and they will certainly hatch with no issues. the SELLER SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THIS. dirty eggs sold for incubation?!?!? why would anyone assume this is ok? take a few mins people. just brush them off at least. dirt is one thing. FEATHERS AND WOOD SHAVINGS thats lazy.

I have definitely seen AND received dirtier eggs than those. Those eggs really aren't bad at all. Some parts of the country, including where I live, is saturated with rain and standing water. So it can be near impossible to ship perfectly clean eggs...that's just how it goes. If those eggs are fertile, they'll develop and hatch just fine. I've hatched chicks from dirtier ones.
