Unfortunately one of my turkeys has dislocated her hip. They are pets and I am extremely attached. I have taken her to a couple of different vets (one more general, one an avian specialist) and x-rays show the dislocation. My options are either letting it "fuse" with scar tissue the way it is, or having them go in through surgery and shave the femoral head (still will not be in the socket).

Has anyone had experience with this? I'm worried about her going to surgery and it since the joint won't be back in the socket any way, I am struggling to put her through that. She is not unhappy - still eating, drinking, and other than not being able to walk at the moment, completely normal. I also have made a sling for her.

Is this a broad breasted or a heritage turkey?

Unfortunately for this situation, she is a BBW. 25 pounds. We are two weeks into this injury - she got her leg stuck on her roost (I feel incredibly guilty). She will stand for 15mins at a time and has taken a couple of wobbly steps.

I am sorry. Since it is a BBW, the situation is only going to get worse. I recommend that no matter what else you do that you give her vitamin B complex in her water. Mix it at the rate of 1/2 tablet per gallon of water. Make it her only source of water. It should be made fresh daily.

I would not have her undergo surgery. Be prepared to cull her when she gets too bad.
