Hello everyone,
Moe is my 6 month old Indian Runner (might have Peking in him also, I'm unsure) that I believe has a dislocated hock joint on his left leg and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to re-locate this kind of injury? I am trying really hard to avoid having to cull him but I also don't want him to suffer.
Just some pre-amble for questions: I have no x-rays. There is no avian vet nearby and none of the vets were able to x-ray him any time soon (or were unwilling to handle a bird) and so I've been reading results on google from here and other homestead groups to see what I can learn. I'm lucky I managed to get him in for the shot and antibiotics at all it seems after phoning them back again once this got worse.
Just to give his history point form for ease of reading:
- Started about a month ago, limping and favouring his left leg.
- originally isolated and treated for bumble as he had a bump on his left foot and no apparent dislocation, just the limping.
- After a few days in isolation, right leg became swollen and so got vet consult over phone
- Vet advised bring him in for a shot of painkiller / antibiotic and gave us antibiotics for his water
- Swelling in right leg subsided
- Left leg worsened in this time. I think even with restricted movement he was still trying to move around and favour right leg + he's a big boy and so is pretty heavy even standing up.
- Couldn't tell what was wrong with his left leg as the bumble appeared to be clearing up and nothing visible wrong with his leg.
- One morning came to change out his bedding and was clear he had further injured his left leg to what the photos are now
- Attempted to splint it which had some success but also just made him want to stand up on his hock joint more.
These are his right leg above just for comparison.
Below is the left.
The leg is rotated and sticks out to the side a bit at the joint.
His right leg will fully extend if I lift the feathered part up a bit and (gently) pull his leg up but the left even get close to a full extension. The joint itself doesn't feel like it has any play in it if I were to pull on his leg and so I'm here looking for advice on if this will even be possible to re-locate this kind of injury as I don't want to just be needlessly manipulating his leg when it's obvious certain movements cause him pain with it. I also realise the longer an injury goes untreated, the less likely it is to be treatable.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
