I need some help. My Americauna rooster managed to get himself hung by his right wing. He was like that for a few hours as I found him hanging in the afternoon. I felt his entire wing and I cannot feel any broken bones. However, when I felt the wing at his shoulder the right side seems to have a much wider gap than the left side. His wing is dragging the ground and it is limiting his ability to get away from the bigger cochin roo. Also, since he now appears dissabled the hens are even starting to pick on him. I don't want to cull as he is a nice specimen of a bird with dark green legs, nice colors and the puffy cheecks. Does anyone know how to reset the wing?

Thank you.

Sorry to hear about you birds accident! If you are sure its dislocated then there is little you can do.

I rescued a dove that was hit by a car a year ago. She has a dislocated wing also. I did a lot of research and also too her to a local vets.

Your rooster will be able to live a normal life with this slight disability. As chickens are not really flying birds, he will not miss that. If some of his wing feathers are trailing on the ground as he walks its a good idea to trim them off. If he seems to be acting 'normally', eating, drinking and not in pain then you don't need to worry - you don't need to kill him.

After a few weeks the muscles in the wing shoulder will get stronger and your rooster may be able to use his wing a bit.

You may want to treat him as if he has a broken wing, just in case this is what is the problem. If you do here is what to do..........

Immobilize the broken wing. Cut about 2 or 3 foot of gauze tape. Gauze tape is gauze that sticks to itself. Wrap the gauze tape around the bird, keeping the wing along the bird's body. It should go over the broken wing to keep it from moving and allow it to heal (not too tight to hinder him breathing).
Replace the gauze tape weekly or when it gets too dirty. After about 2 weeks take off the gauze and the wing should have healed if it was a break.

Hope this helps you.
