My coop is about 25 feet from the back of the house because I was afraid that if I put it far away I would be less likely to clean it and play with the girls. Besides, there is a nice tree to situate it under.
I have sand in the run and wood chips in the house and go through and pick out droppings every other day, if not every day. It doesn't take much time with a kitty litter scoop and salad tongs for the house.
I like having them close so I can hear if there's problems. I have six birds in a 6'x4' raised house with a 10'x6' run and they run around the yard for a couple hours each day. There's no smell but I live in an arid climate which helps.
