I have 8 Dixie Rainbow chicks and one of them has recently been showing signs of walking oddly. Then today she is definitely unable to walk and holds one of her legs off to the side and is not holding the other one correctly. I do not know that there is any way she could have injured herself and she does not act like she is in pain. She just can't get around. I am babying her as much as I can. Is there anything that would explain this? Is there anything I can do for her? She is a sweet pullet.

Hi - I have been raising these Dixie Rainbow chickens since fall and several of mine have noticible toe deformities, i purchased them at tractor supply last August. Overall, as a breed I have not been too happy with these birds. I had 6 to start with, they are beautiful but they are huge! Two of mine are as big as roosters. 3 have toe/foot problems, one was laying huge double eggs and I’ve already lost one - I think the one that was laying double eggs all of the sudden she was sick and died. I don’t think they preen themselves very well at all. However they are friendly, eat a lot of bugs, kill mice and come when I call them. But Not a breed I will buy again in the future. Mine started out like yours with one toe not quite looking right. I thought at first they had broken toes but have inspected the toes and they are not broken. In fact the one that died I thought was kind of aloof from the others since she was a chick.

I have a rainbow that had an issue with her legs. She couldn’t stand and only scooted backwards. Checking it out it sounded like splayed legs and fashioned a leg brace for a few days and it helped. She’s like to the others now.
