DIY leg bands?

is there a good DIY option for leg bands?..

I used small colored zip ties.

Zip ties work well, but keep an eye on them as the chick grows.

Another option we have tried for small chicks is to cut short sections of straw, split them along one side, slide them on the chick's leg, then tape it together. You can use colored straws to tell different breeds/bloodlines apart.
