DIY watering bucket

I wanted to post a pic of the watering bucket I made for my ducks. The large watering can was getting rusted and they wouldn't drink from it anymore but who can blame the. So here is what I did after looking at a lot of diy designs.
Total cost came in at 12.00. I probably could have gotten it done cheaper but I liked the hog feed pan for this.

Supplies:

Paint bucket w/ lid
hose on/off connection
pvc cap
hog pan

I drilled out a hole at the bottom of the bucket and screwed in the hose connection and caulked around the front and back of the connection once it was in place. I then drilled out a hole in the top for the pvc cap and screwed that in so I could uncap it to fill the bucket it and not have to remove the whole lid every time. I like the use of the hose valve because then I can shut it off while filling it. Once the pvc cap is on I have the vacuum I need so I can turn the water on at a low trickle keep the pan filled.

The amount of money i spent on it I know if I shopped around more I could have gotten things down a little cheaper . BUT my ducks are happy now and that is what is most important

I too, spend a lot of time making sure the ducks are happy.

We are working on installing a duck pond in their run with a drain and gate valve, but I also want to provide a separate drinking water source. The stew pot just wasn't cutting it.....but this is the ticket! Your picture and parts list will be very helpful to show the crew what I want!

We use something very similar to this for our chickens and love it.

one i made uses a 6 ft length of gutter with end caps to make the trough. To regulate the water, i installed a toilet float valve mounted into the gutter. i then used some pipe connections to get it so i can just screw my hose onto the toilet valve - then turn the hose on... when the water level gets high enough, the valve shuts off the water flow. when it is too low, the water valve opens and fills back up. It works pretty great in the summer.

My SIL has mentioned building a feed trough for the ducks, out of the left over gutter we installed. I can just picture the matching water trough.

How do you deal with the water warming up while it's just sitting in the hose before it kicks on? I know when I turn on the hose, I have to let the hot water run out first. Any problems from this?
