I currently breed appenzellers and one of my hens who is only a year old has suddenly become very dizzy and will not eat.I isolated her and gave here some antibiotics to see if that would help, however there was not much change in her over night. I have more or less been force feeding here and giving her water as she will not do it herself. I also wormed her a couple of days ago to make sure that worms was not a problem. She has still not perked up and things have seem to of gotten worse as yesterday when i went to check her, her entire head was puffy and a bit swollen!! I dont think it is a sting as there is no visable mark on her and there is not just one area of her face that is swollen! I am only 16 and have never seen this before and i am quite worried as i do not want to lose her as she is a good show hen. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Poor hen. I'm not really sure about her symptoms, but it sound like something neurological. Try doing a search on Wry Neck and read about the symptoms to see if they match. I haven't really read that it is associated with swelling but some describe the symptoms as dizzy. Crested chickens are more susceptible to the disorder.

Check out this link for treatment options if it sounds like wry neck:

thank you for your suggestion and i have had a look at the symptoms for wry neck but she does not crook her neck or is not capable of walking. the only way to describe how she walks is like she is drunk! she staggers and sleeps a lot! very odd! it probably is nurological.
