Do bantam cochin roosters fight with one another? Are they aggressive?

I am planning to order twelve various bantam cochins from Ideal for breeding purposes, but they only come in st. run. If I end up with several roosters, will they co-exist or will I need to get rid of all but one? What would the ratio of cockerels to pullets look like in such a small number?

Also, can day-old bantam cochins be sexed accurately?

I have had banty cochins for a few years now. The roosters are NASTY little brutes, and would not coexist. They couldn't stop fighting, and they were all eventually in individual crates in the garage until we rehomed them all. We ordered from Murray McMurray, and the ratio was 8 roos to 5 hens in our order. However, you should be OK if you seperate them by type and only have one roo in with each batch.

It very hard to sex them at only a day old. You'll be able to tell by three months, though, they have much larger combs than the grils by that time.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to be downhearteneing, just telling my experiences.

Good luck! I hope for the best in your adventure!

Mine all get along famously

A couple of squabbles here and there but nothing major. My dd's fav rooster to play with is a partridge cochin named Patches. He plays on the swing with them and loves to be picked up and petted. We have had them all for over 2 years and would rather have my cochin roos than any other breed!

I've never had Cochins, but I ordered 30 st run Silkies and d'Uccles. About half turned out to be roosters. The good news is, they don't generally start fighting until they reach sexual maturity, so you have a few months to make sure whether they're hens or roos. You'll be able to watch them mature and select the best cockrel for your breeding project.

Right now, I have 3 mature, but still young, cockrels living in a group with my girls. One of them is dominant and he's the only one who mates the hens. They spar with each other sometimes, but haven't drawn blood. Within a month or two, I'm going to seperate them into breeding pens because this truce they have won't last as they get older.

Most of my cochins roos are pretty laid back, I do have a couple that are fiesty, but honestly I think they are just protective of their hens. If they are grown in the same pen they will find a pecking order, and I think they would be fine together.

ETA- Baby bantam chicks are to small to be sexed at day old.

Thanks for all the advice! If I clip the roosters' spurs, will they still be able to injure each other? Or can they do a lot of damage just by pecking?

Harley and Davidson live in their own bachelor pad and get along great (they are a year old now)....they do have arguments once in a while on where the food bowl should go though!

I'm not even kidding! Harley insists on it being on the wood table where Davidson thinks it goes no where but on the floor next to the wood table
