I posted this in raising, but saw this thread and figured i should have asked here.

I have 6 chicks 4 weeks old and my 2 EE's are "fighting" more that usual. Like squaring off and flying at each other, almost like chest bumping. I hope they are just working out the order and not Roo's. Is this normal for girls?

This has just started in the last week. Brooder is 8 sq feet, plenty of food and water and are under a 100W heat lamp.

Opinions?

Mine are doing the same thing, but since they're not pecking at each other I figure they're just playing or it's a pecking order behavior. Let's see what everyone else thinks.

When I had chicks, two of them who I thought were female were doing the same thing and ended up being roosters.
But it could be pecking order.

All chicks playfight. It's how they set up the pecking order.

That being said, I have a couple of adult hens that have fights that put my roosters to shame.

In my experience with chicks the girls fight /play, just as hard as the boys, I posted the same thing a couple of years ago and they told me it was normal, and they are setting up their pecking order, which turned out to be right because the fiestiest little hen I had as a baby is still the top hen today. Not only do pullets challenge each other, but my older hens will chestbump my teen rooster if he gets too pushy for their liking!

like a Mom telling her sassy teenage son "I'll slap you into next week!"
