do hawks REALLY eat grown chickens?

I can't believe how much the blue jays and crows pester them, it's a wonder they can even nest and raise babies...hmmm will have to look and see what fireworks might be left over from last year. LOL I'll probably just leave them be as I have a covered run. As long as they don't bother the chooks, I won't light up the sky. I can see me pulling out the fireworks, saying "make my day"!

We've noticed for the first time this year that we have Red Tail Hawks in our yard (of course the first year we have chickens...which have yet to go outside but when they do will be in a fully covered run). They are pretty brazen and will sit right on the deck railing. My in-laws the next town over have the same thing. They have a small backyard with lots of bird feeders and they have been perching on them almost daily. Maybe they are having a growth in population here in CT.
