We have an 11 week old GLW that we bought sexed as a hen...but...I have some questions. She started developing a redish comb and waddles around 7 weeks but she acts like a hen in many ways. She has feminine legs and demeanor but the comb and waddles are really giving this newbie pause.

I have done a lot of research on this site trying to figure it out but I am hoping that the experts on this site can help. EEEK!

Well, I'm not an expert but, All hens can have big waddles and comb. And roosters can take for ever to grow out there spurs. I hope I help.

I really have no idea, more pictures?

I have SLW that are 3 weeks old, and both of them already have red wattles. One of them already has a bright red comb. So, my humble opinion is that if it was a Donald it would have been rooish sooner?

I think it's a rooster. That's too much color for 11 weeks, and it looks like saddle feathers coming in.

It's old enough that I would expect to see waddles. Maybe not that big, though. And, that last pic, it's sooooo shiny and patterned. I think it's a rooster - so sorry!

I think It's a rooster to, my own little Chibi looked alot like your chicken at that age, and Chibi has proven himself that he's a boy, He/She is so buetiful!!

Um, btw, roosters are actully not all that mean, unless you be mean to him, I have 4 roosters right now, and i say hi to them every day and hug em and stuff like that. Roosters will make this weird sound when there is a threatening hawk in the sky

, so I hope you can keep him, and not kill him just cuz of his gender.

Although sometimes there's no option

We still don't know and Dottie being a boy complicates things for us. We live in an HOA (although very laid back) and when we brought up the idea of chickens, people felt that roosters should not be allowed. With that being said, I am planning on keeping him/her until she either lays an egg or he crows. Even if he crows, I would like to see how things work out. Things I am concerned about:

1. Obviously the HOA and bothering neighbors. We do live at the back of the neighborhood with no one behind us and 3 acres so I am hoping this will mitigate noise/crowing complaints
2. We only bought 9 so I think 8:1 hen to rooster ratio likely isn't enough girls for one rooster. ?? Our coop is only 6x6 so adding more chickens isn't ideal. I tried to get DH to build bigger but he was convinced this was BIG enough. We do have a 15x18 outside covered run so I think plenty of room for 9 but not sure adding more will be a good idea.
3. We are newbies so having a rooster might be a little too much for us to handle. I have read so much about how difficult roosters can be and I plan on having my chickens as pets as well for eggs.
4. I really don't want to hatch chicks as they would be mixed breed and it gets us back to reason #2 (don't want to add more chickens) and I would think rehoming mixed chickens would be harder vs designated breeds or mixes. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

IF Dottie is a boy and we need to rehome, we would try that first. I don't want to think about putting him down but I know that is something that we would have to consider.

I will try to post more pictures and provide updates.
