Do i need a rooster?

i know that hens do not need a rooster to have eggs, but would it be a good idea for guarding or should i just not have one if i do not want fertilized eggs?

It's just a matter of preference. Roosters do help protect the flock, but they are not a necessity for anything. People have them because they like them, basically. If you don't want fertile eggs, probably not.
