Ok. I'm going to try and give the bullet-points...to make this quicker. ;) lol

  1. We had 11 chickens - one bantam roo (Col. Klink) given to us...the rest were purchased pullets
  2. Even after the girls are a month or two past when they should start laying...no eggs
  3. Turns out one of the pullets is a standard size roo....(no name...just called Roo...lol)
  4. We move....and the chickens are moved to a dog kennel as their temporary coop. Transition is pretty smooth.
  5. I put Col. Klink in a dog crate inside the kennel to see if the girls will start laying since they were clearly stressed out (missing tail feathers etc).....and it worked!! Lots of eggs now!
  6. Roo starts to crow....
  7. Fast forward a month and a half to today - I mixed in 3 month old chicks with the flock...which were also in a dog crate inside the kennel....
  8. I also mixed Col. Klink back in the flock......he is now missing feathers on his back and a little bloody from big Roo giving him a beating.... Poor Klink has his head outside the fencing...and won't hardly move. Pretty pitiful looking....

I really like BOTH my roos.... My mom says to cull the big roo bc they all turn mean and she wants the grandkids to be safe. I have 3 boys - youngest is 8 in a couple weeks. Should I crate the big roo until Col. Klink heals up? Should I cull one of them? Should I give them a few days?

What would YOU do???

Not all roosters turn mean.. but, any and all roosters that do attack a person, are aggressive have to be culled, become soup, go to "freezer camp" the first time they turn mean... the very first time they are aggressive toward a person.

I have a very kind and gentle HUGE Standard rooster, and he is the best rooster I have ever had.. he is never mean or aggressive. All the Standard roosters I have had.. 3... have each.. all been very kind and good... the two bantams I tried.. well, they became soup.

Usually, if they are going to be mean, it will show by the time they are full grown..

I've had more bantam roos that were mean than standard roos that were mean.. but, if Col. Klink is a good rooster, not too old.. kind and mellow... you know what he is: you know he is sweet.... I would keep him.
I, most people, can only have one roo at a time... all excess roos go to freezer camp here.. any pullets that turn out to be roos.. gone.

It's not about them becoming mean... some do, some don't.
Your new roo might or might not become aggressive.. but, if the Bantam is good and kind already, and you know that.. get rid of the young one before he kills Col. Klink.

You need to choose.. find a home for one of them.. or... make soup.

Good luck.

from Arkansas! Personally, I would get rid of one of them. It's not going to get better. I have had two roos for a while now, one standard and one bantam, and let me tell you, they hate each other just as much as they used to. It's a big pain having to wonder if one is going to kill the other and having to keep them separated. I'm always having to run outside and pull them apart when they meet each other in our yard. It's added stress that I don't need. It's up to you whether or not you want to get rid of one of your roosters, but I know that I would.

I 2nd what you said about already knowing that Col. Klink is a good roo.

Here's a question then.....

With your bantam roos usually always turning mean.....and your standards are nice....how do you get rid of the big roo?

Both roos have been nice - I've never had either one of them attack me or my kids....they just haven't....and that, I agree,
is a guaranteed trip to freezer camp....or coyote camp.... ;)

Of course, them not being like meat birds, it is surprising me how it's a difficult decision for me! lol They're CHICKENS! haha!

Oh - I should say that big Roo is at least 8 months old....except Col. Klink...he's a year older than Roo....

It's my standard that is the mean one. He's great with people and his hens (for the most part) but he will attack and try to kill any other males off. My little bantam roo never tries to make any trouble but the big guy will come after him from all the way across our large yard. I understand how it's hard for you. I could never kill or eat any of my own birds. If you don't want to do it yourself then maybe you could give one of them to someone who is in need of either a rooster or a good meal. That way he would be appreciated.

Crud - now I'm even more indecisive! lol I went out last night around 3am and put Col. Klink back in the dog crate in the kennel...this way he's protected from Roo.
Still just need to pick one.....
