Do I need to treat my posts?

He doesn't even like the idea that I proposed to get rid of the woodchucks (soaking apples in antifreeze and chucking them down the holes).

I just spit my drink out of my nose.

Thank God it was water!!!

I don't really know that this is useful... but you can easily wrap the post in heavy plastic.. trash bags, whatever ya got.. tape it down with that shiny silver stuff that no one can live without... and viola.. extended life.. make sure that the post holes are raised so you don't get any puddling around the post and your done

no need to treat if your only looking to get a few years out of this

Thanks, Dawn! I like that suggestion. I may go with that.

Er, really? I am sort of at a loss to see how that would work, although granted I do not know for *certain* having never tried it myself.

But, it is damp that rots the wood, and this setup is not in any way going to prevent the buried wood from being chronically damp. Although I am pretty sure that it *will* prevent there from being a really good bond between the post and the soil in the hole, so that the post may be less securely set than if it were naked.

No offense meant to the ingenious poster quoted above but I'd be kinda cautious...

Hmm, didn't think about dampness being held against the wood by the plastic. Maybe what I'll have to do is try a couple of different things and see which holds up best a few years from now.

I check out Lowes and Menards pile of seconds in landscaping timbers... usually for 1.00.
They might have a split or cracked end on them but you can put that part in the ground...
As long as they aren't too warped they work great and the flat sides really make it easy to nail fencing up....
Works for me!
