I am new to chickens. I started out with two Partridge Wyandotte Bantams. My dog got one, which I'm pretty sure was the female.
Next I got two barred rocks, which I'm 99% sure are males, except I haven't heard ANY crowing at 16 weeks. I also have two Rhode Island Reds, which both have red combs and wattles at 16 weeks. Both are getting green/dark feathers on their tales. One has more pointy hackle feathers than the other and the beginning of spurs. The one that doesn't seems to develop a little slower, so I'm waiting. But please share your opinions.
Next I drove about an hour to pick up these Lemon Cuckoo Orphingtons- yes, I hid this from my husband because he now thinks I am WAY insane! LOL. I left there with 5 chicks. 4 orphs, and one easter egger (THANK the Lord for that, because she is female!). My stepmom got 2 of the orphs. Hers are a distinct pair, with the female having no pink on its small comb at 11 weeks, and no wattles. Mine look the same in the comb and wattle department, only one is much lighter in coloring.
I went ahead and got two sexed Barred rocks after realizing that both of my barred rocks were males. So this leaves me with a flock of ten. I fear that I am the most unlucky newbie to chickens and that I have SEVEN ROOSTERS!
To make matters worse, my neighbor called animal control on me because she's angry about my coop's location, and the trimming of some of her branches and vines that were hanging over my fence. She complained that it smelled bad. The officer that came out found no odor and said that she loved my coop and wished everyone took such great care of their chickens:) BUT, I'm leaving town for a week and I'm paying my nephew to take care of the coop. However, No one does the job like mamma, so I'm concerned that the smell will offend the neighbor and she will call animal control again.
I was thinking if I got rid of some of the roosters, it would make things better. But I HAVE HEARD NO CROWS! I have a lady willing to take some of them today- I'm just not sure that they are males.
SO PLEASE HELP ME!!!:))

I just had 9 roos out of 12 chicks. Being new, I didn't really know what i was looking for and basically looking at all roosters! hahaha. I feel your pain. I just learned to look for the rooster saddle feather. They get pointy and shiny feathers on their back near their tail. Hens will never have that, hens always have rounded feathers there.

i feel your pain. i got 8 seven week old EEs from a guy in Vermont, 2 hours away. totally new to chickens i pretty much let him pick. i got 3 hens and 5 roosters. im getting better at distinguishing now, picked up 5 more 15 week old EEs and managed a good 4 hens, 1 rooster (the roo is a silkie mix and i wasnt quite sure of what a rooster comb should look like for him - but hes a funny looking chicken, so im keeping him). next i got 3 silver laced wyandottes and succeeded in choosing 2 pullets and a cockerel.

and yes, my fiance thinks im crazy too! and i have 3 silkies on the way, 2 pullets and a cockerel ;)

i finally found a home for 1 of the 3 EE cockerel im rehoming but man are they hard to get rid of! (i cant bring myself to eat them! they have names! haha)

good luck!!
