Hi
I have a pekin (bantam cochin) and a bantam orpington sitting on eggs, they are from last years september hatch. Do I trust them to hatch some eggs as i have been told not to trust first year broodies?

Ugh, good question! I've got one of those too, and I have her sitting on some leftover purchased eggs. I figured what the heck! So far, so good!

I used a first year buff orpington broody last year. She did manage to raise one of the chicks to adulthood, the other died I do not know why, just found it, but she was a wonderful mother. However, a couple of her chicks pipped and died. I'm guessing that she didn't give them enough room to zip and hatch. A hen will stand slightly on her legs to allow the chicks to pip, zip and hatch. I think she might have sat tight and smothered them.

My did a great job too... I use to like watching her tell the babies to eat.. after a week though she was ready to be free... I think they will be fine, just keep an eye out... Good Luck! Happy Hatching :)

I hope and pray that a first time Broody will do just fine as I just sat mine with 8 eggs from a friend, the broody is a Buff Orp and the eggs are black or lavendar orp eggs!!!
