I have noticed some blood like stuff in my chickens' poop recently. Is this the dreaded coccidiosis? Should I treat them? Can I prevent it with vinegar in their water? How much? I have also heard that sometimes chicken's shed their intestinal wall in their poop and it looks red, but it's fine? Their poop seems normal otherwise. Not runny. White tip. New to all this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

My chicks have had poop similiar to that and I think it is intestinal lining as long as they are otherwise acting normally. I haven't gotten a solid answer about this, but it's been happening on and off for several weeks with no other symptoms. My guess, if I had to take one, is that their gizzards are still developing and not working as well yet...so the intestine may get scraped a little by the food not being ground up well enough yet by said gizzard....again...just my guess at the situation. It happens more for mine when I feed them a new treat or something...even though I give grit too.

I worry less because there are no other symptoms...just keep an eye on them and watch for anything that may develop??

I think your birds are fine. If it was coccidiosis, there poo would be runny and completly bloody. What you are seeing is some intestinal lining is all, perfectly normal.

Coccidiosis causes pain from cramping, you will have runny, bloody poo everywhere. Your birds would be sitting around, lethargic, feathers puffed out, hunched up.

Keep an eye out for more symptoms, it could just be intestinal lining as has been said. An example can be seen here, if you haven't seen this all ready: http://www.chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0

As
for vinegar, it does help keep their immune systems strong and helps fight off bacteria, so if you have some on hand it wouldn't hurt to give them some. Dosage doesn't have to be exact. 1-2 tablespoons in a gallon of water should definitely be enough. Yogurt also works really well when fighting off Coccidiosis. I also use cayenne pepper, and it seems to help, but I haven't used it long enough to see personally if it really is a strong agent against this condition.
