They LOVE LOVE LOVE dandelion leaves. I have a friend who regularly cuts the dandelions out of her yard (and she uses no spray or any chemicals on her lawn) and she gives me HUGE bags of dandelions. I tear the leaves off and feed them to my ducks and they go nuts.

However...if they get out of their pen, they'll eat everything green that tastes good to them - they don't know weeds from good plants!

They will eat lots and lots of slugs, though. Slugs = duck candy!

The problem with weeds is some are toxic when ingested. You should look up the plants first to make sure they don't have any toxins in them before feeding your ducks. My ducks could really careless about the weeds in my yard. They like my grass and plants that I grow.

My ducks prefer young growth to old, so if you have established plants in your garden and young weeds, they could probably help out. But I wouldn't trust them not to destroy young plants, and I also wouldn't expect them to weed older plants like geese do. Geese really are better at eating greens.

We don't know if the ducks are responsible or not, but the little grassy side-yard area they hang out in is surprisingly weed free. I pointed it out to my husband last Fall and he's ready to give the ducks full credit (or their poo

). I know they nibble at dandelion leaves and the yellow flowers so maybe that helps deter their growth. However they also nearly decimated the impatiens I planted near by so I've put a wire fence around them.
