I separate him from the hens and when I came home he was soak and wet. He never sits himself out in the rain. He always comes to the patio.

So I thought he was sad or something?

His ears turn from red to white all the time with his behavior.

It sounds like he was probably trying to get back to them. It probably would have been best to keep him locked up in a coop where he couldn't see or hear the ladies. It's natural for a rooster to try getting to the ladies, even if they didn't know them. (In fact, when it comes to catching roosters, whether my own or rescues, I like using hens to trap or "call in," the rooster.)

As far as emotions go, some people don't think chickens have sentimental emotions. Personally, him being by himself, I think he probably got lonely. I have had certain, "special" chickens who did display signs of sadness, so I believe it is possible, though whether or not your rooster was sad, he was probably more of trying to get back to his ladies.
